On December 11-12th, 2024, the GIC team, with support from the DMCR team, successfully installed two CCTV units at the upper Gulf of Thailand: Samut Prakan and Samut Sakhon. These installations were part of an ongoing collaboration between DMCR (Department of Marine and Coastal Resources), JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency), and GIC, aimed at enhancing the monitoring plastic waste in the upper Gulf of Thailand using two methods. The newly installed CCTV units are located at the river mouths of two significant waterways: the Chao Phraya River Mouth and the Tha Chin River Mouth.
The installation process was led by Mr. Pongpol Wipasuramonton from GIC, who played a key role in coordinating the project between the local technicians and DMCR teams. The proper setup of the hardware for both CCTV units at the designated locations was ensured. Additionally, the testing of live data transmission from both units was overseen, confirming that the continuous monitoring systems were operational and providing real-time data for further analysis.
As part of this project, the DMCR team is also planning to conduct a data validation study. This study will involve cross-validating the plastic waste data captured by the net-based waste collection systems and the CCTV units installed by GIC. The aim of this validation process is to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the data collected, which will be crucial for future decision-making and policy development related to waste management and environmental preservation in the region.
