Overview

The Geoinformatics Center (GIC) is implementing a World Bank–supported project in Bangladesh to equip the Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (BREB) with data and information on future climate scenarios to help mitigate climate and disaster-related risks to its power system assets. As a part of this project, “Workshop on Bangladesh Energy Sector Climate Resilience” was held on 8-9 October 2025 at Dhaka, Bangladesh.

The objective of the workshop was to raise awareness of flood and cyclone risks under future climate scenarios in Bangladesh. Dr. Manzul Kumar Hazarika, Director of GIC, attended this workshop as one of the presenters and panelists. He delivered a presentation on the exposure of BREB’s power system assets to these future scenarios and shared global best practices for adaptation and risk mitigation.

This initiative forms part of the World Bank–financed Electricity Distribution Modernization Program, implemented by BREB and Power Cell, which aims to enhance the delivery, reliability, and efficiency of electricity supply while strengthening institutional capacity.

The workshop was attended by 150 participants from Japan, Bangladesh and India. The inputs received during the workshop will be incorporated to strengthen BREB’s guidelines for addressing extreme weather, disaster, and climate risks in power distribution infrastructure.
