Climate Change and Extreme Flood Events

Year: 2007-2008
Country: Nepal, Philippines, Sri Lanka & Vietnam

Descriptions

The main objective of this project was to develop capacity in national meteorological agencies and universities in 1) Forecasting and estimating probable maximum precipitation and model extreme floods using physically based models in light of future scenarios outlined by the IPCC, 2) Developing worst case scenarios for peak floods and inundations and iii) Assessing the damages caused by such extreme flood events. Sixteen professionals from national meteorological agencies and universities from Nepal, Philippines, Sri Lanka and Vietnam were trained under the project and the project was implemented in collaboration with Monash University, Australia, UNESCO-IHE, the Netherlands and Nippon Koei Co. Ltd., Japan. A good international collaboration among the institutions and a private-sector company from the developing and developed countries was achieved through the project.
