
Overview
The Global Plastics Innovation Program (GPIP) was launched to drive practical solutions. Aligned with the Osaka Blue Ocean Vision, and its role in the G7 and G20, the Government of Japan, a key donor and partner, is spearheading efforts to eliminate marine plastic litter by 2050. This event was organised by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in collaboration with the International Environmental Technology Center (IETC), and the Global Environment Centre Foundation (GEC). The event aimed to bring together stakeholders from across the public, private, and innovation sectors to showcase innovative solutions, policies, and good practices for address plastic pollution, particularly in the tourism sector.
One of our technologies, pLitter AI-CCTV was selected as the innovative solution for tackling plastic pollution wherein Dr. Boonma represented GIC for this international workshop. He presented on the pLitter’s AI-CCTV solution and its impacts through real-world implementation to various stakeholders from across the public and private sectors (e.g. UNDP country offices, SEA government representatives, local businesses and innovators).
Highlights of GPIP
The event focused on addressing plastic pollution through a lifecycle and circular economy approach, sharing valuable knowledge and best practices from innovators and experts in the field. It showcased cutting-edge solutions developed to reduce plastic waste, with an emphasis on sustainability across all stages of the product lifecycle. The event also featured thematic discussions and networking sessions, providing opportunities to explore how these impactful solutions can be scaled for greater environmental impact. A highlight of the event was a site visit to FP Corporation’s Nishinomiya Sorting Center in Japan, where participants saw firsthand the practical applications of eco-design and the use of recycled materials in action, offering real-world insights into combating plastic pollution.
