Overview
The Geoinformatics Center (GIC) and the Sustainable Environment Research Institute (SERI) of Chulalongkorn University visited the Environment Department, Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) on 23 April 2026 in Bangkok. The meeting aimed to present key achievements of the project “Development of Waste-Free Communities along Lat Phrao Canal and Waste-Free Schools in Bang Khen and Lak Si Districts,” an ongoing collaboration between GIC and SERI.
This project is part of the umbrella project, Plastic Flow Mekong Project, funded by the Mekong Republic of Korea Cooperation Fund. The project focuses on mapping and monitoring plastic leakage into aquatic environments and developing innovative, data-driven solutions for effective waste management. The project has been implemented over a period of 2 years and 3 months, covering six pilot communities in the Bang Bua area of Bangkok: Bang Bua Community in Bang Khen District, Run Mai Phattana Community, Roy Klong Community, Sapan Mai 1 Community, Sapan Mai 2 Community, and Chai Klong Bang Bua Community. In addition to Bangkok, the project has been implemented in Can Tho city of Vietnam; Vientiane capital of Laos; and Battambang city of Cambodia.
Meeting Highlights
The GIC team was represented by Dr. Kittiphon Boonma, Project Coordinator of the PlasticFlow Mekong project and Research Specialist at GIC along with Mr. Karun Mooksrisai, Research Associate at GIC. During the meeting, the GIC and SERI teams presented key results, field implementation experiences, and lessons learned from the project. The session aimed to support the Environment Department and relevant district offices (Bang Khen and Lak Si) by providing evidence-based insights to strengthen source segregation, enhance community participation, and improve waste management practices. Discussions also focused on translating research findings into policy recommendations and scalable strategies to support BMA in advancing sustainable and systematic waste management.
The meeting was attended by approximately 30 participants, including the Director of the Environment Department, Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), the Director of the Solid Waste Management Bureau, officials from Bang Khen and Lak Si District Offices, and other key stakeholders.
