Overview

The Geoinformatics Center (GIC) participated in the AIT Decarbonization Nexus 2025 held on 11-12 September 2025 at the AIT Conference Center. This is a flagship sustainability event organized by the Office of Sustainable Campus (OSC) in collaboration with AIT schools, research centers, stakeholders, and other specialized organizations. At the event, GIC showcased its ongoing project, “PlasticFlow Mekong,” at the SDG Research Competition. Alongside this initiative, we showcased two of our innovative tools; pLitter CCTV and mobile application, both developed to enhance plastic pollution monitoring in riverine and terrestrial environments.

pLitter CCTV is an AI-powered tool for monitoring and managing plastic waste, automatically detecting, categorizing, and tracking plastic waste in real-time, pinpointing pollution hotspots and flow patterns. On the other hand, the pLitter mobile app serves as a citizen science-based survey tool that enables users to identify and report plastic pollution hotspots on land, encouraging community engagement in environmental monitoring.

Through our presentation, we highlighted the project’s impact and its direct contributions to several UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including:

  • SDG 4: Quality Education
  • SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation
  • SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
  • SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production
  • SDG 14: Life Below Water

GIC team, represented by Ms. Ushnish Tuladhar and Mr. Hau Nguyen, also participated in a series of knowledge-sharing workshops. These included sessions on “Building Climate Resilience with Nature-Based Solutions” and “Keys to Success: A Circular Economy & Systems Thinking”, offering valuable insights into innovative approaches for sustainable development.

Event Highlights

The AIT Decarbonization Nexus highlighted the convergence of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategies, nature-based solutions (NbS), climate innovation, and research-driven entrepreneurship. This year’s Nexus highlighted the convergence of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategies, nature-based solutions (NbS), climate innovation, and research-driven entrepreneurship. The event included multiple sub-events such as the SDG Research Fair, Inter-University Hackathon, Workshops by different AIT Centers, and an exhibition. The research fair included 19 other undergraduate and post-graduate participants from various departments within AIT.  It provided a platform for all stakeholders—students, researchers, startups, policymakers, and industrial partners—to collaborate on scalable solutions for climate action.
