Bangladesh | 2012-2016
The main objective of this project was to create hazard, vulnerability and risk database and maps for drought, earthquake, flood, landslide, tropical cyclone, tsunami and technological hazards in order to strengthen the risk management capacity of the Department of Disaster Management (DDM) of Bangladesh. Hazard prone areas of Bangladesh were mapped covering geological, hydro-meteorological and technological hazards to assess the exposure. Vulnerabilities of population, assets, infrastructures and economic activities were also assesses to estimate their risks.
The study also contributed towards incorporating appropriate risk-reduction strategies and prioritizing them into the country’s development planning processes. Outputs of the project would allow decision makers to prioritize risk mitigation investments and measures to strengthen the emergency preparedness and response mechanisms for reducing the losses and damages from future disaster events.
