The 22nd Meeting of the Sentinel Asia was held in Taiwan Space Agency (TASA) from 30 to 31 January 2024. The Sentinel Asia is a regional initiative to share space-based data and information, such as satellite images, for effective disaster management in the Asia-Pacific region. It was established at the Asia-Pacific Regional Space Agency Forum (APRSAF) meeting held in October 2005.
The Geoinformatics Center of AIT serves as the regional satellite data processing hub for Sentinel Asia. The satellite data are acquired through emergency observations immediately after a disaster, and value-added products are developed and disseminated to help the disaster-affected countries in their emergency response and recovery efforts. The Steering Committee of Sentinel Asia comprises experts who meet regularly to operationalize Sentinel Asia in the Asia-Pacific region in collaboration with the relevant national agencies. The Steering Committee also develops strategies for promoting Sentinel Asia in the region.
Dr. Manzul Kumar Hazarika was elected as the Co-Chair of Sentinel Asia during the 22nd Streeting Committee meeting, and he assumed his responsibilities for two years from 1 February 2024. The other Co-chair of the Sentinel Asia is GISTDA, Thailand.
